Week 23 of Learning 2013-14

The boys graciously doubled up on some schooling, and we finished up week 23 today.  Here’s how it went…
Micah, Kindergarten Bible – He continues to work in his AWANAS Sparks book.
Phonics – This week Micah worked on the long ‘a’ and long ‘e’ sounds.  He worked on the phonograms ‘-ail, –ain, –ay, –eat, –ee, –eed.’  His sight words were ‘little, down, can, see, not.’

Poetry – This week Micah’s poem was ‘The Giving Farm.’  We used it to discuss periods, capital letters, and rhyming words.

Caleb, Fifth Grade Bible – Caleb continues to work in his AWANAS T&T Ultimate Challenge book.
Math – This week Caleb worked on more carrying in multiplication; angles; and measuring angles.
History – This week Caleb learned about Leif Ericson, the Christian Viking.

While I’m hoping we can get another week knocked about by Sunday, I’m not sure…we’ve got lots of fun stuff and some obligations planned for the rest of the week.  So, we will see…

Week 22 of Learning 2013-14

We finished up week 22, and here’s how the week went…
Micah, Kindergarten Bible – Micah continues to work in his AWANAS Sparks book…he’s working on memorizing the books of the New Testament.
Phonics – This week Micah worked on the long ‘I, o, and u’ sounds.  He worked on the “-ide, –ike, –ine, –ire, –one, –ose, –une” phonograms.  His sight words were up, look, is, go, we.

Poetry – We picked up the printer out of storage, so we are back to doing poetry.  This week our poem was “I’m a Little Penguin.”  We used the poem to discuss periods, commas, and word with the long I sound.

Math – This week Micah did more work with place value.
Caleb, Fifth Grade Bible – Caleb continues to work in his AWANAS T&T Ultimate Challenge book (which is still proving quite difficult).
Math – This week Caleb worked on regrouping; division; more fact families; and divisor, divident, quotient.
English – We opted to skip English since we were starting a new history program that would require a good bit of writing (hence I can incorporate English/grammar skills).
History – We began using A Living History of Our World, America’s Story Volume 1 this week, and Caleb really seemed to enjoy it.  We discussed “who lived here first.”  Caleb had to complete two notebooking pages using what he learned as well.

We will be beginning Week 23 this afternoon, much to the dismay of the boys.  But – since we’re a good bit behind and Brian is out of town, we HAVE to use this time to try to get in as many double/triple days as we can.  I’m hoping we can knock out 2 weeks this week…we will see.  Smile

Christmas 2013…just a little late

Yes, I know…this is way overdue, but I’m just now getting around to it.  We had a wonderful Christmas down here in Florida.  Although we missed our families, we made the most of it.
Christmas morning, the boys woke up with tons of excitement and anticipation to see what Santa had left for them.  After checking everything out, we had our traditional breakfast of cinnamon rolls (one day I will venture to make them from scratch).
We opted to enjoy a Christmas lunch buffet at a local bistro, and I must say…this was SUCH an easy option.  Eat all you want, and then someone else gets to clean up.  What kind of deal is that?!!?
Once lunch was over, we went to a local park so the boys could ride their new bike and scooter (bike for Micah and scooter for Caleb).  The park was followed by a much needed nap, and then we enjoyed the rest of the day just being together as a family.

Week 21 of Learning 2013-14

Wow, I’ve really neglected the blog lately.  I didn’t even post our review for week 21 in a timely manner.  We finished it before 2013 was over.  Here’s how it went…
Micah, Kindergarten Bible – Micah continues to work in his AWANAS Sparks book.
Phonics – This week Micah worked on the long ‘a’ sound.  He learned the phonograms “-ave, –ate, –ame, –ale, –ake.”  He also worked on the long ”i" sound.  His sight words were ‘you, it, in, said, for.’

IMG_1096IMG_1097IMG_1098IMG_1099IMG_1101IMG_1108IMG_1109IMG_1110
Math – This week Micah worked on learning to count with bigger numbers.  He was introduced to tens and ones.
IMG_1102IMG_1103IMG_1104IMG_1105IMG_1106IMG_1107
Caleb, Fifth Grade Bible – Caleb continues to work on his AWANAS T&T Ultimate Challenge book.
Math – This week Caleb worked on multiples; long multiplication; multiplication word problems; multiplying more than two numbers; and carrying in multiplication.
English – We continued to play games for English, but we began focusing on adjectives.  We’ll continue this “fun” style of learning English as long as it’s working.
We haven’t schooled since right after Christmas, but I’m looking forward to getting back into the groove of things next week.  Here’s hoping the boys are just as eager…
