We are finished with yet another week of second grade. I’m hoping that by the end of this week we will be back on our regular 4 days per week schedule. Here’s how this week went for us.
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “God is a Trinity.” Caleb’s memory work for the week was First Catechism Q&A 6-8. We read I Kings 18:17-39 and Matthew 3:13-17 as well.
Health: This week we discussed the tips for having a pleasant meal. We focused on table manners.
Science: This week’s lesson focused on dental care. Caleb learned the jobs of the front, pointed, and back teeth. He also reviewed the # of teeth present at different stages in life.
English: This week we reviewed nouns and compound words.
Vocabulary: We continued to review our words and definitions. Caleb took his test and scored 100%.
Social Studies: This week for geography we added the Indian and Arctic Oceans to our studies. Our social studies lesson discussed patriotic holidays. We learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the history/holidays associated with them.
Reading: This week read the following books:
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble
”Camping” article by Evan-Moor Publishing
Lunch Boxes by Fred Ehrlich
Math: We discussed addition +9 and mental math this week. Caleb is still doing really well with the Math U See curriculum. He really seems to enjoy it, too.
Art: This week we learned about complementary colors. Our first lesson was just an introduction into what complementary colors means. The second lesson had Caleb drawing a “Red Grass and Orange Sky” opposites picture. He drew a mountain scene (cloud, sun, mountains, brick house, orange tree, grass, and sky). Then he had to color his picture with the complementary colors (for example…grass is green, so you color it red). Then you stare at the picture for 30 seconds and then stare at the remaining blank half of your white paper. You’re supposed to be able to see the true colors in the afterimage. However, Caleb and I both had problems seeing anything different. LOL! Oh well…he still learned all about complementary colors.

Second Grade Week 5 in Review
It seems like we’ve been working on week 5 forever. We had to start it before vacation, and we just finished it yesterday. With that said, here’s how week 5 panned out for us.
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “Noah and the Flood.” We read Genesis 6:1 – 9:29. Caleb’s Bible memory verse for the week was Genesis 6:8.
Health: We discussed the benefits of a good dinner. Caleb now knows what he should be eating for all 3 meals and snacks each day. Now, let’s see how well he follows those guidelines…
Science: We discussed food for health. This was basically a review of the different food types (energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals).
English: Caleb finished up his personal story this week by completing the writing process. I think he did a WONDERFUL job.
Social Studies: In Geography, we reviewed the 5 states we had previously learned. I then added the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to our study. In Social Studies, we discussed some of our freedoms (freedom of speech, press, and religion). We also discussed the flag and how to properly care for the flag.
Reading: Caleb read the following books this week
The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone by Stan & Jan Berenstain
”Frog and Toad” poem by Christina Rosetti
Theodore All Grown Up by Ellen Stoll Walsh
Math: This week we worked on solving for the unknown. It took Caleb a bit, but he finally grasped the concept. He seems to really be enjoying the Math U See.
Art: Our first activity had Caleb using tertiary colors to create a fall picture. Tertiary colors are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. Caleb had to complete a tertiary color wheel for his final activity this week.

Caleb’s 7th Birthday Bash
We had Caleb’s 7th Birthday bash on the 10th of this month. However, I’m just now getting around to posting about it (life’s been crazy, and we’ve been out of town, too). For the first time in his 7 years, we decided to have his birthday party somewhere other than at home. So, we opted to have it at Party Playgrounds (a local bouncy house place). And after the success of his birthday party, I may not ever have another one AT home. LOL! It was so nice having someone else clean up the mess for a change.
The kiddos played for a bit, and then we all gathered for pizza, cake, and ice cream. We let them go back out and play for a bit more, and then we called them in for the opening of gifts. Once that was all done, they were free to play until they were ready to go. Caleb, Micah, and the other children had so much fun releasing all of their energy. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the staff at Party Playgrounds was very helpful.
Here are pictures of the big bash.
