We’re done with another week of schooling here at Childress Academy. Here’s how week 15 went for us…
Bible: Our memory work was 1 John 4:4b, and our Bible story was on “Moses and the Ten Plagues.” We read Exodus 7:14-12:32. I’m hoping that Caleb will watch “The Prince of Egypt” again soon to reinforce the Bible lesson.
Health: This week we learned more about our eyes. We did a little eye “illusion” where we held a pencil out in front of our face, and then closed one eye, then closed the other eye. It seems as though the pencil is moving, but it’s just your eyes playing a trick on you. Caleb thought it was neat.
Science: This week we learned how we can all learn lessons from beavers. They are hard workers, they work together, they take care of their environment, and they take care of each other.
English: We’re continuing to work on poems. Caleb finished his couplet, and he started working on a shape poem.
Vocabulary: We did a few more activities to review the definitions of our words, and then Caleb had his test.
Social Studies: Caleb took his Unit 1 test, and he scored 100%.
Reading: This week we read the following books:
Bears’ Vacation by Stan & Jan Berenstain
The Night Before the Tooth Fairy by Natasha Wing
Ocean Life by Brenda Z. Guiberson
Duck! Rabbit! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal & Tom Lichtenheld
Math: This week we had an introduction to subtraction. I’m really hoping that subtraction goes a bit smoother since we’re using Math U See. So, we’ll see in a few weeks if he’s getting it.
Art: I finally pulled out the art lessons again, but we only got one completed this week. We continued talking about value by making a Black and White picture. Caleb had to draw lines on a white piece of paper, and then cut it out. He then glued them on a black piece of paper.
We’ve already started week 16, and we’ll share how the week goes at a later point. Tomorrow we are off to the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta. I’m taking the boys to see the preview showing of Charlotte’s Web. This will be Micah’s first trip to the Center, so I’m hoping he does well. He sat through Toy Story 3 and Despicable Me at the theatre, so I’m hoping he’ll sit through the puppet show. Wish me luck…LOL!

Second Grade Week 14 in Review
We have completed another week of studies at Childress Academy. It feels great to be on track and STAY on track. We’ve done a fairly good job thus far this year, and I hope we continue to stay on top of our schooling. Here’s how week 14 went for us…
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “God Sees Me.” Our memory work was First Catechism Q&A #12. We read John 4:1-42 to learn more about how we cannot hide from God.
Health: This week we started learning about our eyes. We learned how our eye is very similar to a camera, and we learned the different parts of the eye.
Science: This week we started learning about beavers. Caleb learned why we have the saying “busy as a beaver.”
English: This week we finished up our chapter on verbs by taking a chapter test. Caleb scored 98%. We started a new writing chapter, and we’ll be working on writing poems for a bit.
Vocabulary: We got a list of new words this week: badge, banner, corner, design, display, fold, parade, rectangle, salute, and tread. Caleb did a few activities to learn the definition of the words.
Social Studies: In Geography, we learned the location of Russia. In Social Studies, we finished up our study of patriotic songs by discussing “God Bless America.”
Reading: This week we read the following books/passages:
”Ducks Don’t Get Wet” poem from Evan-Moor
”The Case of the Missing Apples” story from Evan-Moor
Pigs Love Potatoes by Anika & Christopher Denise
Our Library by Eve Bunting
Math: This week we spent several days reviewing all of our math facts. Caleb took his Unit 2 Test, and he scored 100%. I’m hoping he really has all of the addition problems memorized because we start subtraction this week. Wish us luck…
In other news, I’m already thinking about 3rd grade curriculum choices. I know, I know…it’s WAY too early. LOL! I’m just browsing…that’s all. As of right now, I think we’ll be making a few changes, but I’m not certain yet. So, just keep checking back.

Second Grade Week 13 in Review
We finished up week 13 about 2 weeks ago, but I’m just now getting around to posting the review. Here’s how the week went:
Bible: Our Bible verse for the week was James 1:3. Our Bible story was on “The Trials of Joseph.” We read Genesis 37:1-36 and Genesis 39:1-23.
Heatlh: This week we discussed the importance of dental care.
Science: We discussed animal habitats and how to indentify animal homes.
English: This week we continued discussing verbs. We discussed a few special verbs like tell, give, sing, see, do, and go. We discussed using exact verbs, and we also discussed homophones. I have to share this funny about homophones. I was asking Caleb what a homophone is, and he said, “a phone you have a home.” I couldn’t help but laugh…hopefully he now understands that they are words that same the sound but are spelled differently and have different meanings.
Vocabulary: Caleb took a test over his words, and he scored 81%. I think he got a bit confused on some of the definitions.
Social Studies: In Geography studies, we added Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico to our states. In Social Studies, we discussed “America the Beautiful” and the history behind the song.
Reading: This week we read the following stories:
Johnny Appleseed by Madeline Olsen
Slinky Scaly Snakes! by Jennifer Dussling
Star Wars – The Clone Wars: Yoda in Action by Heather Scott
Math: This week we worked on addition of the extras (3+5, 7+4, 7+5). This completes our addition chapters. We’ll have one more review week, and then we’ll move on to subtraction.
As always, thanks for following our journey in home schooling. We love hearing comments from our readers! Let us know how your school year is going if YOU are a home schooler, too!

Second Grade Week 12 in Review
Have I mentioned how great it feels when we’re all caught up with our schooling? LOL! Well, it feels FABULOUS! I’m so glad that we’re staying on top of our schooling at this point in time. I know that life will eventually throw us a curveball (or two), and we’ll be ready when it does. Here’s how week 12 went for us:
Bible: Our Bible story was on “God is Invisible.” Our memory work was First Catechism Q&A #11. We read I Kings 19:1-18 to discuss the Bible story.
Health: This week we discussed teeth. We began our discussion by reviewing the types of teeth and their jobs. We also discussed why animals have the teeth they do.
Science: This week Caleb learned all about the essential earthworm. He learned how they help farmers, and all about their characteristics.
English: This week we started a new chapter on verbs. We discussed what verbs are, adding “s” or “es”, verbs in the past, and verbs now or past. Caleb did a GREAT job with this concept, and I think he’s catching on quickly.
Vocabulary: Our words for the next two weeks are: cone, cube, earth, fern, fuel, grain, lizard, miner, present, and seam. Caleb did several activities to learn the definition of these words.
Social Studies: In Geography, we continued to review the states, continents, and oceans we’ve been studying. In social studies, we discussed “My Country ‘Tis of Thee.” I’m learning so much about these patriotic songs right along with Caleb, and it’s actually interesting.
Reading: This week we read the following stories;
Amazing Whales! by Sarah L. Thompson
Cheetah Cubs by Ginjer L. Clarke
Math: This week Caleb learned all about making “9” in addition. He’s almost done with his math facts, and he’s doing a GREAT job.
***In Handwriting, we began learning cursive this week. Let me just tell you…Caleb is so excited to learn how to write in cursive. He’s also doing a wonderful job with it, too. I hope his enthusiasm remains as the letters get a bit more difficult.***

Second Grade Week 11 in Review
We are all caught up with our schooling, and we can get back to our 4-day week this week. I couldn’t be happier about that. We’ve had to do some catching up due to the fact that I’ve had to spend so much time working on setting up this new Co-Op. However, we are ALMOST done with the majority of the paperwork and forms. So, we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. :)
Here’s how Week 11 went for us…
Bible: Our memory work for the week was Isaiah 58:11a. The Bible story was about “Jacob’s Dream.” We read Genesis 28:10-22.
Health: This week we started discussing personal hygiene…bathing, brushing your teeth, brushing your hair, etc.
Science: We have moved on to a new unit in Science, and this unit focuses on animals. This is good news for Caleb since he’s an animal lover for sure. This week we discussed how everything was created for a purpose.
English: Caleb finished up his final copy of his “writing instructions” lesson. He also took a test over the writing chapter we’ve been studying. Here’s the final draft of his paper -- “How to Make Macaroni and Cheese.”
Vocabulary: We reviewed the definitions of the words we’ve been studying, and Caleb scored 94% on his test.
Social Studies: We reviewed the states we’ve been studying in geography. In social studies, we learned the history behind “The Star Spangled Banner” by Francis Scott Key.
Reading: Caleb read his first official chapter book (meaning it didn’t have hardly any pages and was longer than 30 pages). He’s read other chapter books, but they’ve still been rather short. This week he read Superduper Teddy by Johanna Hurwitz. He did a wonderful job of reading and comprehending the book.
Math: This week we working on making ten in addition. Caleb is almost done learning all of his addition facts, and he’s doing really well.
Art: We didn’t do any art this week because we had too much else going on. I hope to get back to it next week.
***Here are some pictures of Micah’s art work from preschool. He brought these home about a week ago. It looks like he’s having fun being creative***
As always, thanks for following our 2nd grade adventures at Childress Academy. We’ll be back at the end of the week to share more exciting learning experiences.

Second Grade Week 10 in Review
We are done with another week of second grade here at Childress Academy. Things are still smooth sailing right now, and I’m happy about that. Here’s how week 10 went for us:
Bible: Our memory work was First Catechism Q&A 10. Our Bible story focused on “God is Everywhere”, and we read Jonah 1-2 to learn more about this concept.
Health: This week we discussed thinking right thoughts. I, myself, think this is a valuable lesson for children (and even some adults I know).
Science: We spent several days reviewing everything from Unit 1, and Caleb took his Unit 1 test. He scored 100%.
English: Caleb is still working on his writing assignment…writing instructions. He decided to write about “how to make macaroni and cheese”, so he’s been busy planning, drafting, revising, and proofreading.
Vocabulary: Our words for the next two weeks are “absorb, anchor, brush, bud, center, core, factory, hive, sapling, and trunk.” Caleb did several activities to study the definitions of those words.
Social Studies: In Geography, we added the states Missouri, Kentucky, West Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland to our study. In social studies, we began discussing patriotic songs. This week we learned about “Yankee Doodle”, and I must say…I learned quite a bit from our study. I didn’t realize the history behind the song, but now I do.
Reading: We read the following books this week:
Bugs! Bugs! Bugs! by Jennifer Dussling
The Best Seat in Second Grade by Katharine Kenah
Clifford: The Big Leaf Pile by Norman Bridwell
Math: We actually skipped math this week. When we started out, Brian was down in West Palm Beach with our math DVD. So, I just decided we’d take the week off.
Art: This week we started discussing value. Caleb was introduced to the concept of value, and then he had to create a drawing using a black crayon on white paper. He could draw whatever he wanted, but he had to express value using those the black crayon.

Micah’s First Day of Preschool
Micah started preschool back on August 12th, and he LOVES it. I think I’ve shed more tears than he’s even thought about. LOL! No, I really haven’t cried, but I did get teary-eyed when I left him that first day.
He goes to school on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 9-12. I know that sending him to preschool may sound weird since I plan on home schooling him; however, we sent Caleb to preschool, too. I feel it gives them a great foundation, and it also helps with socialization and breaking that “mommy bond.” Caleb went mainly because he thrived on social interaction, and we are sending Micah to break the “mommy bond” that he clings to so tightly.
He’s doing really well, and he seems to enjoy his teacher and his classmates. There are only 4 other kids in his class right now, and I think they’ll get another one in September. So, a class of 6 will be GREAT for him.
Here he is on the first day…
Our baby boy is growing up…he’ll be a teenager before we know it…ACCKKKK!!!!!!!

Second Grade Week 9 in Review
We actually finished up week 9 last week, but I never took the time to write up the post. Here’s how week 9 went for us:
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “Abraham and Isaac.” Our memory work was Proverbs 3:5 (one of my FAVORITE Bible verses of all time…along with verse 6). We read Genesis 22:1-13 to learn more about Abraham and Isaac.
Health: This week we discussed the importance of getting plenty of rest. I know this is something we, as adults, need to learn to remember.
Science: This week we discussed responsibilities, and we discussed rest in science, too.
English: Caleb took a test over nouns, and then we moved on to our 2nd writing chapter. This chapter will have Caleb writing instructions. He just started planning this week, and the lesson will continue for another week or so.
Vocabulary: This week Caleb took two cumulative tests covering the vocabulary terms he’s learned thus far in 2nd grade. He scored 100% on the first test, and he scored 90% on the 2nd test.
Social Studies: We reviewed the states, oceans, countries, continents, and other places we’ve learned so far in Geography. In Social Studies, Caleb learned about Veteran’s Day and Thanksgiving. This concluded our study of patriotic holidays.
Reading: We read the following books/stories this week…
More Than Anything Else by Marie Bradby
”The White Rabbit’s Evidence” poem by Lewis Carroll
”Desert Life” article by Evan-Moor publishing
Dragon’s Pancake Party by Steven Westren
Math: This week we discussed rectangles and squares. Caleb also learned doubles +1 addition facts.
Art: We did not complete any art lessons this week. This puts us a bit behind in art, but it’s easy to catch up because we only do art twice each week. So, stay tuned to see what we’ll be working on.
***In other news, I’m so far behind on this blog. LOL! I still haven’t posted about our vacation to Virginia back in July, Micah’s first day of preschool, and we just returned from Pensacola this weekend. So, check back in later for those posts…not sure when I’ll get around to them, but hopefully soon!***

Second Grade Week 8 in Review
We are done with yet another week of second grade. It feels so good staying on schedule and getting things accomplished. Caleb has been very cooperative as well. If I know that there will be a kink in the schedule, he’s been working with me to get the work done (on the w-ends if need be) so that we will stay on track. I LOVE that he’s enjoying school better this year. It makes my heart proud.
Here’s how this week went for us:
Bible: Our Bible story focused on “God is a Spirit.” The memory work for this week was First Catechism Q&A 9. We read Acts 17:22-34 to learn more about our Bible lesson.
Health: This week we learned more exercises. We learned how to do the Elephant Swing, Ostrich Run, and Seagull Wing Stretcher. Caleb also read about how to play Circle Tag. I’m hoping he’ll have the opportunity to play when we get together with some of our homeschool friends.
Science: This week we discussed “Fun & Fitness.” Caleb learned even more about exercising in his science lessons.
English: This week we continued discussing nouns by learning about capitalizing titles and using commas in a series. Caleb had some difficulty with the latter concept, but he soon caught on and understood it.
Vocabulary: This week Caleb finished up the two-week lesson by completing more activities that reinforce the meaning of his words. He also took his test, and he scored 92%. He is doing really well in vocabulary, and I’m so proud of him.
Social Studies: In geography, we added Canada, Mexico, Gulf of Mexico, Alaska, and Rhode Island to our studies. In social studies, we continued discussing holidays. This week we discussed Independence Day and Labor Day.
Reading: This week we read the following books:
Daniel Boone – Frontier Explorer by Keith Brandt and Joann Early Macken
Gilbert, the Surfer Dude by Diane de Groat
Math: This week we discussed shapes (circles and triangles) and addition of doubles. Caleb also took his Unit 1 Test. He is doing really well in math, and he really likes it this year. Again, I’m so pleased of his work thus far.
Art: This week Caleb created a “Complementary Turn About”. We weren’t able to complete the 2nd art lesson this week, so we’ll tack it on to next week’s. This week completed our study on the element of color, too. We’ll move on to another element of art next week.

Second Grade Week 7 in Review
We are back on track and returning to our 4 days per week schooling schedule. That’s such wonderful news to my ears. LOL! With that said, here’s how last week went for us.
Bible: Our Bible story was on the “Tower of Babel.” We read Genesis 11:1-9. Caleb’s memory work was James 3:16.
Health: We began discussing exercising your whole body. Caleb learned two exercises…the tiger touchdown and the flamingo stand.
Science: We learned about our skin…pores, oil, sweat, etc.
English: We continued to discuss nouns. We learned about adding “s” to nouns, adding “es” to nouns, plural nouns that change spelling, and common/proper nouns.
Vocabulary: Caleb got new words this week. The words for this two-week session are: “ape, brain, branch, cavern, chimney, dozen, flame, net, spear, and torch.” We did several activities to reinforce the definition of the words.
Social Studies: In Geography, we added Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Virginia to our state study. In social studies, we started discussing patriotic holidays. We began by studying Memorial Day and Flag Day.
Reading: We read the following books/stories this week:
”Going Around Earth” by Evan-Moor Publishing
”A Bell for Cat – An Aesop Fable” by Evan-Moor Publishing
”Cave Pet” by Evan-Moor Publishing
Peppe the Lamplighter by Elisa Bartone
Math: We discussed addition +8 this week. With the Math U See curriculum, Caleb is really knocking out his math facts. He continues to do really well. I’m very pleased with our curriculum choice for math this year. Thanks to all of my friends for your wonderful reviews of MUS.
Art: We continued to discuss complementary colors this week. Caleb created two complementary color projects…1) Cut Paper Complementary Color Project and 2) Complementary Rip & Paste.
Thanks for continuing to follow our second grade adventures. Join us next time to see what we’ve been up to this week!

Second Grade Week 6 in Review
We are finished with yet another week of second grade. I’m hoping that by the end of this week we will be back on our regular 4 days per week schedule. Here’s how this week went for us.
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “God is a Trinity.” Caleb’s memory work for the week was First Catechism Q&A 6-8. We read I Kings 18:17-39 and Matthew 3:13-17 as well.
Health: This week we discussed the tips for having a pleasant meal. We focused on table manners.
Science: This week’s lesson focused on dental care. Caleb learned the jobs of the front, pointed, and back teeth. He also reviewed the # of teeth present at different stages in life.
English: This week we reviewed nouns and compound words.
Vocabulary: We continued to review our words and definitions. Caleb took his test and scored 100%.
Social Studies: This week for geography we added the Indian and Arctic Oceans to our studies. Our social studies lesson discussed patriotic holidays. We learned about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln and the history/holidays associated with them.
Reading: This week read the following books:
The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses by Paul Goble
”Camping” article by Evan-Moor Publishing
Lunch Boxes by Fred Ehrlich
Math: We discussed addition +9 and mental math this week. Caleb is still doing really well with the Math U See curriculum. He really seems to enjoy it, too.
Art: This week we learned about complementary colors. Our first lesson was just an introduction into what complementary colors means. The second lesson had Caleb drawing a “Red Grass and Orange Sky” opposites picture. He drew a mountain scene (cloud, sun, mountains, brick house, orange tree, grass, and sky). Then he had to color his picture with the complementary colors (for example…grass is green, so you color it red). Then you stare at the picture for 30 seconds and then stare at the remaining blank half of your white paper. You’re supposed to be able to see the true colors in the afterimage. However, Caleb and I both had problems seeing anything different. LOL! Oh well…he still learned all about complementary colors.

Second Grade Week 5 in Review
It seems like we’ve been working on week 5 forever. We had to start it before vacation, and we just finished it yesterday. With that said, here’s how week 5 panned out for us.
Bible: Our Bible story this week was on “Noah and the Flood.” We read Genesis 6:1 – 9:29. Caleb’s Bible memory verse for the week was Genesis 6:8.
Health: We discussed the benefits of a good dinner. Caleb now knows what he should be eating for all 3 meals and snacks each day. Now, let’s see how well he follows those guidelines…
Science: We discussed food for health. This was basically a review of the different food types (energy, protein, vitamins, and minerals).
English: Caleb finished up his personal story this week by completing the writing process. I think he did a WONDERFUL job.
Social Studies: In Geography, we reviewed the 5 states we had previously learned. I then added the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans to our study. In Social Studies, we discussed some of our freedoms (freedom of speech, press, and religion). We also discussed the flag and how to properly care for the flag.
Reading: Caleb read the following books this week
The Berenstain Bears and the Missing Dinosaur Bone by Stan & Jan Berenstain
”Frog and Toad” poem by Christina Rosetti
Theodore All Grown Up by Ellen Stoll Walsh
Math: This week we worked on solving for the unknown. It took Caleb a bit, but he finally grasped the concept. He seems to really be enjoying the Math U See.
Art: Our first activity had Caleb using tertiary colors to create a fall picture. Tertiary colors are created by mixing a primary color with a secondary color. Caleb had to complete a tertiary color wheel for his final activity this week.

Caleb’s 7th Birthday Bash
We had Caleb’s 7th Birthday bash on the 10th of this month. However, I’m just now getting around to posting about it (life’s been crazy, and we’ve been out of town, too). For the first time in his 7 years, we decided to have his birthday party somewhere other than at home. So, we opted to have it at Party Playgrounds (a local bouncy house place). And after the success of his birthday party, I may not ever have another one AT home. LOL! It was so nice having someone else clean up the mess for a change.
The kiddos played for a bit, and then we all gathered for pizza, cake, and ice cream. We let them go back out and play for a bit more, and then we called them in for the opening of gifts. Once that was all done, they were free to play until they were ready to go. Caleb, Micah, and the other children had so much fun releasing all of their energy. Everyone seemed to have a good time, and the staff at Party Playgrounds was very helpful.
Here are pictures of the big bash.
