It’s That Time of Year Again…

I don’t know about other homeschool moms, but for me,  with January comes thoughts of next year’s curriculum.  I’m not really sure why, but it seems that it’s usually the same time each year and my wondering begins…my mind starts racing to the next school year and the choices to be made.  There are lots of questions to be answered…is what we’re using working?  If not, is it the method, the curriculum, etc?  What other options are available (this is usually REALLY overwhelming because of all the options)?  How much will I have to spend for everything?  Will this make schooling easier, harder, etc?  It’s no wonder it drives me crazy.  I sometimes wish my children came with manuals…especially in regards to their schooling and education.  But – it just doesn’t work that way.
With all of that said, there WILL be changes next year in our curriculum choices.  I’m still ironing them all out, and I think I’m close to being finished.  However, I’m sure I’ll continue to wonder if these NEW changes are the best ones.  I’m not ready to share the changes yet, but it will be soon.
Not only will their be curriculum changes, but I now have to figure out how to juggle schooling BOTH boys.  Micah will start Kindergarten next year, and that only adds to  my stress and concerns.  For the past 5 years, Caleb has had my mostly undivided attention while schooling.  That all will change next year, and I’m not sure how he’ll handle or react to that.  He is going to HAVE to learn how to be more independent with his studies.  So, I’m slowly trying to help him with that now…figuring out the assignment, doing most of it independently, moving on to the next assignment, etc.
So, I’m spending time on the Internet researching the curriculum available, and I’m also trying to figure out a schedule that will work for both boys.  I have to make sure I’m able to focus on one child, while the other works independently.  That’s hard when your child is in Kindergarten…but I’m going to use centers and electronic learning time (computer games, educational Leap Pad/DS games, etc) for help.
Slowly, I’m making progress, and I can’t wait to come back and share our plans for next year.  Until then…I’ll just keep you guessing!  Smile
What about you…when do you find yourself beginning that ever-so-dreadful curriculum choice conversation?  Or – are you one of the lucky few who have found what works and never worries or HAS to make changes?  Whatever the case…I wish you peace and success in your choices and plans.

I'm with you about the curriculum. I don't think there is ever going to be a perfect fit regarding curriculum, but you and I both know that that is true for traditional schools as well. We can at least rest assured that we are trying to get the best fit for our kids instead of the pounding of square pegs into round holes that is sometimes the case in the mainstream classroom.

I think they will do fine--you will be surprised. Caleb should be able to do some work on his own now...and that is the perfect time for you to help Micah. Caleb might also be able to help Micah on some projects as well--a learning environment for all!

either way, you always think about what will work for the kids....even through college! It doesn't get any easier, sad to say.

Welcome to my world! lol! Although mine are close enough in age that we do everything except math and grammar together. I think training Caleb to become more independent is a good thing. It might be a little rough in the beginning, but you will be glad you did in the long run! Good luck with whatever you choose!

I'm thinking that you must be INCREDIBLY organized to do it. I seriously considered it for my kids, but I'm not even remotely capable of juggling all that.
