Fourth Grade Week 1

We are a week into 4th grade, and so far…things are going REALLY well.

Caleb’s favorite subject is Latin, with math being in second place (which is a HUGE shock to me).  Here’s how our first week went…
Bible – Our Bible story was on “A Faithful Slave.”  We read 1 Peter 2:18-25 and 1 John 4:10.
Latin – Caleb learned the difference between the English and Latin alphabets, and he learned the sounds of the Latin vowels.  His practical Latin words were ‘salve’ and ‘salvete’ (hello to one person; hello to more than one person).  His Latin vocabulary words for Lesson 1 were ambulo, Deus, toga, via, and luna
Vocabulary – This week’s lesson focused on synonyms.  The words were:  romp, appoint, jittery, glee, pledge, startle, grief, sweltering, vessel, and triumph
English – This week Caleb reviewed phonics, vowels, consonants, how to use the dictionary, and alphabetical order.
Reading – Each week (or however long it takes to complete), we’ll be reading a read-aloud together.  This week we read Stuart Little by E. B. White.  If you have any favorite family read-alouds, please share them.  I’ve found a few lists online, but I’d love to hear what your family loves.
Math – This week Caleb worked on unnecessary numbers in story problems; diameter; numbers in other story problems; symmetry; and doubling numbers.
Exploration – Each week (or two or however long he’s interested), Caleb will be picking 3 topics to explore further.  This week he chose Atlantis, the Statue of Liberty, and the Eiffel Tower.  He read several library books on each, and then he completed some activities.  He read a worksheet about Atlantis and answered review questions, and he completed a notebooking page on the Statue of Liberty.  We’ll be continuing these topics next week as well.

I’m thrilled with the results of four first week of fourth grade, and I’m excited to see Caleb progress through the remainder of the 2012-13 school year.  I hope you’ll join us on this fun journey and follow our adventures.  Smile
