First Grade Week 6 in Review

While all of our friends are just now heading back to school, we just finished up our 6th week. I LOVE the fact that we school year-round because it gives us much more freedom and flexibility. Hey, the 4-day week isn't so bad either. :) Here's how our 6th week of lessons panned out:

Bible: Our Bible lesson was on "Being Taught in God's Way." Our Bible verse was Galatians 5:13b.

Phonics & English: We added "-est," "-ast," "-ust," "-ist," "-ift," and "-uft" to our word families. "Want," "one," "father," and "your" were added to our list of service words. Our English skill for the week was syllables.

Handwriting: We worked on the numbers 3, 4, and 5. The letters "Rr," "Vv," and "Ff" were also covered.

Spelling: This week was a list of review words (10 words pulled from the previous lists). Caleb still seems to enjoy spelling, and he's doing really well.

Reading: We're still working in Reader A, and Caleb is still doing really well. He has to read a story every day, and then he has to do some sort of comprehension activity after. This may be sequencing, matching characters, etc. He's doing a GREAT job.

Math: We finished up our chapter on addition, and we're now working on place value. Caleb worked on "tens and ones in numbers to 50" yesterday, and he did GREAT.

Heritage Studies: This week we learned about Christopher Columbus and his boyhood dream of being a captain. We also learned about making maps.

Science: We finished up our chapter on sun and stars with a test. We start a new chapter next week. I've been looking at other science curriculums to see if I wanted to change for Caleb's benefit. He really seems to have an interest in science and all things animals. He keeps telling us that he's going to go to Africa and other places when he's older so he can study and draw animals. So, I may need to find something to supplement that will continue to foster his love for animals. If you have a recommendation, send it my way...I'd love to see what all of you are using.

Art: Our art lesson was on how artists use landscapes in their pictures. We didn't get to finish the assignment, but we're hoping to get it finished this upcoming week. We're also contemplating sending Caleb to semi-private art lessons. There's a lady in Perry that teaches drawing and painting to homeschool children, so we're thinking about that. Again, he loves to draw, and while I can teach him some things...I just can't teach him what he needs I don't think. I'm not an artist, and I do NOT know enough to play one either. :)

As always, thanks for following our first grade adventures. We look forward to sharing next week's fun with you.
